His W can single handedly turn a fight into his favor. The damage is enough to shred through tanks and squishies alike.
His Ultimate R makes it very hard for the enemy to not take poke damage. This is especially true if Kog’Maw is going for the AP build.
With proper peel, he can take over a game quite easily due to his Q and W. He also has some amount of self-peel with his E, but it is better for him to maintain his distance from CC.
Very immobile which can make him a prime target for engage champions. Once engaged upon, he can do nothing unless he gets some help from his teammates.
Once his W is down, he will be useless unless he has some sort of item or numbers advantage. His W forms the core of his entire kit so if the enemy waits it out, he won’t be as effective.
When going for the AD build, his Ultimate R is next to useless in terms of both utility and damage. It also costs a high amount of mana which is really bad for Kog’Maw.

Kog’Maw is rather weak in the early game. Play safe and avoid fighting until you have a few levels under your belt.
Avoid fighting in the early game. Instead, focus on farming and gaining as much gold and XP as possible. Once you have a few levels behind you, you can start to fight.
Once you’ve destroyed the bottom lane tower, rotate to the mid lane and try to take that tower down to open up the map.

Stay grouped with your team at all times in the mid-game. If you’re alone, you will be an easy target for the enemy team.
Play safe and avoid getting too cocky if you’re not ahead. If you get caught out in the mid-game when Baron is up, the enemy will be able to take it for free. Only play aggressive if your allies are nearby and ready to help you.
Stay with your Support at all times. Like we suggested, it’s important that you’re always with your Support in the mid-game otherwise you’ll be an easy target.
Continue grouping with your team and staying near your Support. If you’re ever too far forward, the enemy may look to pick you off. Stay towards the backside of your team.
Watch your positioning at all times in team fights. Try to stay at the maximum distance possible to increase your chances of dishing out damage and surviving the team fight.
Try and use the range from your W and the poke from your R to harass the enemy as often as possible before a team fight occurs. Do this without putting yourself in a poor position if possible.
His major laning powerspike is when he gains access to his W. If the enemy happens to linger around him for too long, this ability will allow him to melt through health bars at level one itself.
When his enemy laner misuses their main mobility spell, Kog'Maw can punish them hard by using his Q on them and then pelting them with his W empowered auto-attacks.
His Ultimate R will provide him a finishing move on enemies who are low on health. If he goes for the AP build, he will find his Ultimate R to be way more useful to him during the laning phase.
Once he gets his core items, he can use them in combination with his W to get rid of enemies with ease. All he needs from his team is protection.
Fighting in open spaces is very important for Kog'Maw else he can become a victim of targeted or chain CC combos. Once this happens, it is very difficult for Kog'Maw to survive the ordeal.
A Quicksilver Sash can preserve his mobility and let him play more freely during this phase of the game. If he goes for an AP build, a Zhonya's Hourglass should help him massively.
At this phase of the game, Kog'Maw can two to three-shot squishy targets if they can't escape his W empowered auto-attacks in time. It makes him very powerful, and a high priority target for the enemy team.
His positioning will determine how powerful Kog'Maw is during fights. In general, he should always go for the front to back style of play as his W allows him to shred through health-bars of tanks.
While contesting neutral objectives, Kog'Maw should be using his Ultimate R to land some poke and soften his enemy. Under no circumstances should he walk up too far as he may instantly get killed if he over-steps. He is most powerful when he is behind his backline and is fighting only when the enemy has used up all their CC/burst abilities.
