Garen counter tips

Laning Against

Garen’s Passive gives him great long term sustain in lane. Seek to deny him that sustain at every opportunity through frequent harass.
Garen’s GarenE deals extra damage to lone targets. You can mitigate the damage by fighting beside your minions. They will also start focusing him if he auto attacks you.
Garen is ghosted when using his GarenE and can make it difficult to notice if he activated his GarenQ with his GarenE up. Be mindful of this as he can cast GarenE followed by GarenQ to run past minions and hit you with a quick and unexpected GarenQ trade.

Strategy VS

Garen’s build path can be very different from game to game. Keep a look at his items and play accordingly depending on what he is buying. If he is going full damage, you probably won’t be able to 1v1 him or fight him alone.
Garen lacks strong engage options and hard CC. Champions that can kite well such as Vayne, Lucian and Teemo are strong counters to Garen.
Avoid wasting valuable resources (such as Summoner Spells or Ults) on Garen unless you’re able to kill him outright if he’s split pushing. Post-11, Garen can quickly top up his health to full thanks to his Passive and stay active on the map.

Power Spikes

After Black Cleaver, Garen can stack armour shred with his own armour reduction by virtue of his GarenE (25% reduced armour after landing four ticks of his GarenE ) for a total of 43% reduced armour.
At level 6 Garen will gain access to an execute with his Ultimate GarenR. Unless you can kill him before he can kill you, do not fight him alone and definitely do not stay in lane if you’re low on HP as his Ultimate GarenR does a considerable amount of damage.
At level 11, Garen’s Passive becomes powerful enough to meaningfully stay on the map if he needs to keep pressuring following unsuccessful enemy ganks or fighting in general. Garen can look to take even unfavourable trades in an attempt to whittle down enemy health and effectively siege through attrition.
