Garen counter tips

Laning Against

Garen’s Passive gives him great long term sustain in lane. Seek to deny him that sustain at every opportunity through frequent harass.

Garen’s

E deals extra damage to lone targets. You can mitigate the damage by fighting beside your minions. They will also start focusing him if he auto attacks you.

Garen is ghosted when using his

E and can make it difficult to notice if he activated his
Q
with his
E
up. Be mindful of this as he can cast
E
followed by
Q
to run past minions and hit you with a quick and unexpected
Q
trade.

Strategy VS

Garen’s “True Villain” mechanic makes Garen a very strong duelist against enemy champions marked as the True Villain. Avoid fighting or approaching him if you’re marked unless you have a clear advantage.

Garen lacks strong engage options and hard CC. Champions that can kite well such as Vayne, Lucian and Teemo are strong counters to Garen.

Avoid wasting valuable resources (such as Summoner Spells or Ults) on Garen unless you’re able to kill him outright if he’s split pushing. Post-11, Garen can quickly top up his health to full thanks to his Passive and stay active on the map.

Power Spikes

After Black Cleaver, Garen can stack armour shred with his own armour reduction by virtue of his

E (25% reduced armour after landing four ticks of his E) for a total of 43% reduced armour.

At level 6, Garen gains access to his True Villain mechanic (

R Passive) which gives him unprecedented dueling capacity against the True Villain giving him 1% target max hp damage per auto attack and per tick of his
E
and converting his Ult damage from magic damage to true damage. In short, don’t fight him if you’re the True Villain.

At level 11, Garen’s Passive becomes powerful enough to meaningfully stay on the map if he needs to keep pressuring following unsuccessful enemy ganks or fighting in general. Garen can look to take even unfavourable trades in an attempt to whittle down enemy health and effectively siege through attrition.
